Industrial design is concerned with the design of serially and therefore industrially manufactured products. A basic distinction is made between two areas of industrial design: the design of capital goods and consumer goods.

The area of capital goods includes, for example, production facilities, electronic devices for craft or industrial applications, medical technology systems and laboratory equipment as well as commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses or rail vehicles. Consumer goods include furniture, sanitary and electronic products and household appliances as well as vehicles used for private purposes such as cars, motorcycles, scooters and bicycles.
