The control panel - the flexible machine's interface

A control panel refers to the external control unit of a machine or device. This control panel is used to control and configure the machine or device, acting as a human-machine interface, and allows all product parameters and functions to be monitored and controlled directly. Movable and adjustable control panels are used out of ergonomic and usability considerations.



The general structure of a control panel

To cover all these functions, a control panel generally consists of hardware comprising a screen or touchscreen, along with a number of buttons, switches, rotary pushbuttons or joysticks. The housing that integrates all these components is usually mounted on a movable bracket so that it can be adjusted to be as comfortable and ergonomic as possible for a wide variety of operators.  Additionally it serves as protection for the components and can be utilized for heat dissipation.

User Interface is important

The second very important component of a control panel is the user interface, which graphically displays all functions on the touchscreen, provides interactive support for operating procedures and summarises all functions in a clear and understandable manner. All visible components – control surfaces, displays, pictograms and icons – are designed as part of a complex user interface design process. The interplay between the user interface design (UID) and the interaction between the operator, the user interface and the machine gives rise to what is known as the user experience, or UX.
